I just finished reading this and am wishing it had been published, and widely read, when I was a kid. I remember sitting through years of classes thinking I could accomplish so much more if only I wasn't tied to so many mandatory lectures, but there was no way out. Now, I have my doctorate and my wife has her master's. We each run our own businesses and have been self-taught since little from our formal educations has proven helpful. We have learned the hard way that, when hiring staff, we must ignore academic backgrounds. A person's drive and ability to learn on their own is infinitely more important than a diploma. I believe that the principles taught in this book, if followed, would produce people I would be happy to welcome into my business- actually, I'd be begging them to join.Product details

Exceptional and very easy to read outlook on alternative education methods. I chose this book whilst researching unshooling and I found it inspiring. It contains just the right amount of history on the origins of education and public schooling, examples of unschooling implementation, and other very useful tidbits. Inexpensive and took only a couple hours to read while toddlers ran around. Highly recommend to anyone interested in alternatives to public school.
I heard the author talk about this book in a podcast and was struck by some similarities of our own "successful" education and how that's influenced wanting something different for our children. We hear about the failures of the public school system and think of illiterate graduates who can't function in jobs. By standard measures I was a public school success story. Top test scores, Valedictorian, top ACT score, full scholarship to the University of my choice and yet when I finished I felt terribly unprepared for the rest of my life. I was no longer following a blueprint set out by someone else and I came to some realizations about what I was truly passionate about and embarked on a journey of self-education that has been the basis of what I've done since. I wanted for my kids not just to have some basic literary, numeracy and job skills but to have the chance to develop their individual talents, maybe even excel in a specific area that was meaningful to them and their community. The fear of their meeting roadblocks to opportunities in the form of certifications held me back until I was able to see others charting their own course. This book offers a jump-start that could take longer to learn by trial and error. It includes some key points in the history of modern government education, the principles of an education that honors the free-will of the individual, and some practical and specific examples of what it looks like day to day. A quick read, well-organized, and practical guide for anyone wanting to nurture education opportunities that engage both mind and heart.
I found this book to be "thin," thin on new ideas and thin on depth. It became clear as I began to read the book that if you have already read Gatto, Peter Gray or other key homeschool/unschool materials, or if you even know the term unschooling, this book has very little, if anything, to offer you. This book is a summary of all the material most unschoolers already know. It's an argument for those who aren't familiar with freedom based education.
It was a quick, easy read (the book is very "thin" itself.) But it was superficial. It was clear that he was taking his history from Gatto, and using newspapers and things to find supportive quotes. He clearly doesn't have any real understanding of John Dewey, nor does he have any real philosophy of education. This book is an argument for homeschooling, for letting interests (what he calls passions) direct education. The thing is, interest-based education is the greatest lesson from Dewey. He helped us see how interest and experience shape the process of learning, and how schools can be used to instill a lifelong love of learning. (By the wayt, Dewey's ideas lost. Save for his lab school, the establishment didn't like Dewey and he was investigated by the FBI. He was a threat to their factory-based approach to schooling.) Dewey also helped us see how life itself is education and how children are naturally curious. There is nothing to unlock. We just need to free the learning.
If you are really interested in freedom based, interested based or what Boyack calls passion driven education, go read some unschoolers. Try the website Living Joyfully. What you will find is way more depth, and a better understanding about how to construct a home life where living is learning. You will find the secrets to creating a life where learning itself is free.
I started homeschooling my 6&8 year olds this fall because the local charter school while very good was just not a good fit for my kids. My son is a budding engineer and my daughter was bored and tired of being told to be quiet and listen even though she already knew the material. My son complained that they never leaned science, just talked about it. I brought them home and tried to do the same thing but with more emphasis on the subjects they were interested in and at their levels. We’re now 4 months in and it isn’t working. My mom gave me a copy of this and his children’s materials for Christmas. This is brilliant. It’s just what I was looking for. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of unschooling but freaked out over the idea of my kids not ending up somewhere besides my basement. But now I understand that you aren’t just setting them adrift with no supervision. You are using their passions to teach them what they need to know and guiding them to the information they want to find. This I can do. This is what I want to do.
